On 135 katha of open countryside near Cumilla, the vacation house occupies barely seven — a low, curving retreat that lets the landscape lead. Sweeping thatched roofs gather the rooms into a single gesture around a courtyard and a chain of ponds.

Deep verandas on bamboo posts open the living spaces to the fields, catching the breeze and casting long shadows through the day. Hand-painted motifs, lime-washed walls and woven lamps root the interiors in the crafts of rural Bengal.

At dusk the house glows across the water — a reminder that the most sustainable building is the one that belongs to its place.
